The 90s

Today we're going back to the days when you always had an extra set of batteries on you in case your Discman died. Back to the days of Dial-up internet, Nick at Nite, denim, florals, spandex stirrups, and fanny packs. That's right, I'm talking about the 90s.

The 90s were a very transitional point in fashion, often talked about like two separate eras: the early 90s, characterized by grunge fashion, and the late 90s/early 2000s. For the sake of simplification, I am going to follow this precedent, and group the late 90s and the early 2000s together, and save that era for another post.

The grunge culture that emerged in the early 90s blended destruction, leather, denim, and flannel with dainty florals, lace, frills, and bodycon dresses. It wasn't uncommon to see an acid wash denim bucket hat paired with a sunflower print sun dress, ripped tights, and a pair converse sneakers.

Melissa Joan Hart as "Clarissa" on Nickelodeon's popular show rocks her patterned tights, high socks and ankle boots with her cutoffs and oversized leather jacket.

Accessories; always a must. The bucket hat was a 90s staple as far as accessories go. Having a bad hair day? Just throw on that hat with the oversized flower on the front and nobody will notice your cowlick.

Second-skin bodycon dresses like Tori Spelling's (the floral print) were super cute in the 90s.

Clueless' Cher and Dionne wear over-the-knee socks (making a huge comeback now) with their super-short dresses. Note Tai's flannel skirt. Flannel too has made a huge comeback in recent years.

As I've already implied, the 90s are currently experiencing somewhat of a revival. Below, some celebrities show their 90s sides:

Possibly the queen of neo 90s grunge, "Gossip Girl" star Taylor Momsen in her oversized plaid shirt and cutoffs.

Again, Taylor Momsen here in a super frilly Barbie-pink skirt with black fishnets, and a leather jacket.

And here again in a plaid print tent dress.

How'd She Do That?

Looking like a total bombshell, Evan Rachel Wood graced the cover of November's issue of Nylon Magazine. I could not tear my eyes away from the gorgeous photos, and fell head over heels for the retro styling. From her cat eyeliner to her decade-inspired getups, everything about this shoot is dead on and I'm loving it.

Bustiers, jackets, high waistlines, hot pants, skirts, florals, denim, vinyl, and juicy pops of color are key for this look. So with ERW was my muse, I scoured VPV for some similar garments and here's what I came up with:

Why we love them: The detail on these boots is incredible. They are beautiful. The low heel also makes them perfect to wear every day, wherever you go.

How to wear them: The Western look was pretty big among spring 2011 ready to wear lines. Pair these boots with jeans, denim shorts, or above-the-knee dresses and lots of chunky stone, bead, feather, and leather accessories.

My Vantage Point

Today my glorious new shredded t shirt from VPV arrived in the mail. It's tissue soft, cropped, and shredded to perfection. I'm in love. I snapped a few photos demonstrating a couple of different ways I'm going to wear it.

It will also look awesome with my high-waisted black skinny pants (which didn't make it into this post, as they are in the laundry).

Style Crush

Kate Nash

My style crush this week is on the beautiful, talented, and (of course) amazingly stylish Kate Nash. Kate is an English singer/songwriter whose wardrobe is made up almost entirely of vintage dresses and skirts. She loves color and isn't afraid to try anything.

Kate's style is romantic and cutting-edge all at the same time, combining London street style with feminine vintage pieces.

I think I've seen two pictures of Kate in pants. She is almost always in a skirt or a dress, usually with tights. For some reason, I find that both strange and quaint. It's weird to think about living in dresses, yet it makes me nostalgic for the days when living in dresses was the norm.

Prep School Geek Chic

Well, my prayers have officially been answered. God is filling the world with nerdy men! ...Sort of. One of my favorite recent trends in men's fashion is the prep school/geek chic look that involves sweaters, vests, belts, blazers, ties, and of course, those big nerdy glasses that Mark Salling (above) is looking so fine in. It's more polished than the standard jeans and t shirt, but you don't have to be going to the Oscars to wear it. If you're feeling intimidated by the look, try adding just one piece to your outfit. Wear your jeans and a t shirt, but add a vest, belt, blazer, or sweater. You'll be amazed by how much more pulled together you can look just by adding one item. Check out the pros below:

This specimen is Chris Pine. Chris is looking deliciously preppy in his matching pants and blazer, oxford, belt, tie, and loafers.

The always amazing Justin Timberlake opts for a vest and tie with his jeans. But he puts his own spin on the look, adding a leather bomber.

Pharrell Williams looking super sexy in his argyle sweater. He also adds a little flair with his fedora.

Taylor Lautner and Chase Crawford demonstrate the different ways to wear a vest. Taylor looks cool and clean with his buttoned up over an oxford and tie. Chase, sans tie, looks a little more relaxed with both his top buttons and vest left unbuttoned.

Bruno Mars opts for a little bit of everything; suspenders, fedora, nerdy glasses, leather bomber, and plaid oxford. Be careful attempting this one. Sometimes adding too many accessories can make you look confused. Bruno pulls it off nicely by matching his accessories to the colors in his shirt.

Icons We Adore

Twiggy

This week's Icon we adore is none other than the glorious Twiggy. When Lesley Hornby, nicknamed Twiggy for her long skinny legs, burst onto the fashion scene at the age of 16, she forever changed the modeling industry. Her long, lean build and big blue eyes gained her international popularity as a fashion icon. Since Twiggy, the fashion industry has sought out models with features similar to the ones Twiggy was so well known for, so she is often credited as the first modern fashion model.

Twiggy's modeling career peaked during the sixties, which was a very exciting time for fashion. Pixie cuts, psychedelic prints, and how-short-can-it-get hemlines reigned supreme as women all over the world embraced a fashion revolution. At the head of this revolution was a doe-eyed teenager from England who would go down in history as a fashion icon.
